Wayne,
Teaching Python on the other hand gives you shell scripting

Sorry our posts must have crossed each other. Next to StarBasic, Python
is probably the most intuitive language and the easiest to learn. I
like Python because it complements best with XML. I believe this is
also the main reason that Fedora is so heavy on Python scripts. I
similarly learned Python on my own. Once out of the beginner level,
O'Reilly's "Python Cookbook" is one of the most useful books, and is
highly recommended.
I like Python for another very important reason. OOo has a built-in
Python-UNO bridge allowing StarBasic programmers to write Python scripts
which can be subsequent called from a StarBasic macro. Personally, I
view Python as an important extension of StarBasic, a turbo-charge, for
office automations. There is really no conflict.
Again, look forward to seeing you in Oahu. Wayne
