Aloha Ron, Thanks. Hopefully calm, level heads will prevail and the outcome will be good for all interested parties.
I hope that you will openly share the outcome. The sole purpose of this meeting is to correct some of the misunderstandings that have arisen between and among members of the Board of Directors and Scott as Executive Director. I agree that much useful feedback is lost or hard to discern on a conference call versus a face to face meeting. It's also true, in my opinion, that a conference call conveys more or at least different information than an exchange of email on a public mailing list. The reasons why we've decided to hold this particular meeting on a conference call are: 1) It's real time 2) It's more spontaneous 3) It's the only way we can meet this weekend and for the next few days. I'm in Makakilo recovering from recent surgery, Jim is in Kailua or Town, Joe is going to be at Work, Scott will be in Ewa Beach (I think). 4) It will have many of the advantages of a face to face meeting in terms of communications cues (rising pitch of voice, volume of voice, cracking of voice, etc) and none of the logistical problems of having to physically meet. > May I suggest an open meeting where members are invited? The reasons why we've decided to hold this particular meeting in private are: 1) We want to be able to let our hair down and try to focus on making real progress on "items of misunderstanding". 2) As you know, if we make the meeting public or open to all members, there's going to be a natural human tendency to grandstand or speak to the audience instead of solely to each other. I believe that, while this would be informative to the members and possibly great entertainment as well, it would work against our chances of achieving our stated goal for this meeting. > I've been on > boards where meetings are open to the public, but the public is NOT invited > to speak, unless called upon by the chair. I agree that this is desirable for regular Board meetings, that's how it used to work at HOSEF when the meetings (called "organizational meetings" then) were held monthly and most recently at McKinley School for Adults under the able chairmanship of James "Andy" Strobel, with the other members of the board at that time being Michael Bishop (vice-chair), Karen Lofstrom (Secretary) and Hank Seamen (Treasurer). All exceptionally good people to have on a Board of Directors. We can only hope to regain that kind of governance. > I would be happy to attend and if it is open to members only, please let me > know where/how to sign up and where to send the money. If we get through this process with HOSEF still intact as a Hawaii Non-Profit Corporation, you'll be welcome to join and attend regular, open to the membership, Board Meetings. As far as how to register as a member/pay dues/etc, you'd have to check with Scott Belford <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for now since he's the only one with the ability to accept your dues/give you a receipt/deposit the money in HOSEF's bank account. Thanks for your concern and willingness to be involved in the process of improving HOSEF.
