That indeed is an old version. I suspect that Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex will not 
update cleanly, or otherwise to any other supported version of Ubuntu. You 
would need to upgrade to Jaunty Jackalope, then Lucid Lynx, and Precise 
Pangolin. Ubuntu supports upgrades to the next version only. If running an 
LTS (long term support) version of Ubuntu, you can upgrade to the next LTS 
version. This assumes you haven't made any significant changes to your 
Ubuntu install.

I recommend you copy the data files off, reformat, and reinstall. If you 
don't like the look or feel of Unity, you might want to try Lubuntu, or 
Xubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). At least you would get support for the 
life of the machine.
