I think I answered this question only in private mail, so I'll add my feeling about it :
About notify-osd : It needs composite manager to be really useful, and openbox is not a composite manager. Also, having composite support is not really a priority, it increases needed ressources, and support is not perfect, especially with old hardware. I think the standard notification-daemon will end at some point in the ISO.
