As I understand it, all of the software in the 10.10 repos is compiled for i686 and, unless otherwise stated, the software in the 10.04 repos is compiled for i386. The obvious answer, to me, is to maintain the 10.04 version for < i686 by using the Lubuntu-Desktop PPA for the LXDE parts. This will give these old machines another 2½ years grace.
