Indeed, you're right. Using "sudo /etc/init.d/lxdm restart" does complete the 
live CD boot process and lands me in a true Lubuntu DE instead of that LXDE. 
And the buttons are there in the Lubuntu DE so it's all somehow related to the 
Live CD not completing the boot process on it's own.

No worries. Since you have a whole new build process in the works I look 
forward to helping you test. Sorry to be a nuisance.

I think it's because you use startx. LXDM do some black magic to enable
features that startx probably doesn't (consolkit here). I suspect it's
because you don't have some commands.
