I'm giving it a try, some apreciations: - must install gnome-packagekit (graphical front-end) - It's a complete replacement for synaptics+update-manager and the softwares related - maybe the inclusion of packagekit will need some of pulishement to be included perfectly on lubuntu - it's way more friendly than synaptics :) - it adds 'lots' of shortcuts to the system preferences menu (but it's unified in the add/remove programs , just like it was on 10.04 for UM pack) - it's not connecting to the actualizations :/ ? (a reboot will make the trick) - here on my pentium 3 it runs well, it's not very ram-demanding and just like update-manager it runs on the background but with some root processes, increasing a little the ram demanded for the system and i don't know if it's heavier than "update-manager pack" - i 'feel' that is lighter. - the UI launch faster than synpatics and update-manager respectively, opening a category makes the system 'lag just a little' i think because it loads the list IN THAT moment -a change of what we are used to in synaptics. - it interacts beautifully with the notification area... and the icons are nice :) - in the packagekit page there are some screenshots<http://www.packagekit.org/pk-screenshots.html>that show interaction with the notifier popups that Lubuntu use - it's as configurable as update-manager and the whole thing (i like to maintain it off and update the packages myself when i remember to do so - quite often really :) - only problem it's when i do that conf with UM pack, UM wasn't 'there around' anymore, packagekit is still there (maybe needs polish for this) - don't know how to add a new ppa :( - it groups the updates when it's from the same family :) - in general i find it very attractive and friendly - once installed it asks for launch the new app installed :)
My user apreciations :) Humble opinion: honestly i think that we should use something less complicated and nicer than synaptics for the average user :) and maybe packagekit it's a good way to make it. (i really would like it if it were included :) -- jpxsat
