Actually I'd argue that the oldest ones are the LEAST likely to have DVDs. I remember when I got my PowerBook (one of the last of the PPCs) the SuperDrive (DVD rather than CD) was pretty exotic. I would say as a general rule DVDs are pretty uncommon across the Apple PPCs as a whole.
I'll also add that USB booting has only on occasion worked for me, again with the most support being for the newest machines. Regardless, OpenFirmware has a strange quirk of being inconsistent. Sometimes things work and sometimes things, inexplicably, don't. That being said, we need a CD-size image for the PPCs. On the subject of testing, the QA tracker is missing a download link to the latest desktop (the alternate is there), which is the appropriate size. This makes official testing impossible without all testers consistently using the same image. I know, preaching to the choir. I did grab the latest daily and the installation just plain failed, but haven't filed a bug for some circumstantial reasons-- it's coming. Also there are bugs relating to mirrors during install 756719, notification-daemon crashing 927040, and pcmanfm crashing during install 926980. There are plenty more where that came from that I didn't file because I just got too plain tired last night.
