This might be a general problem between all flavours of ubuntu ppc and yaboot:
Even with the fresh install which still came with kernel 3.2.0-16 the update to 3.20-17 didn't pass like expected The 3 files (symlinks!) vmlinux, initr.img and initrd.img.old were put on the mount level ( / ) and not into /boot where they should be to point to the newer kernel. I've to do that by hand. Frankly, in Debian that problem never happened.
