Not sure I understand ∅ are you running 12.10 from an upgrade? I am having these issues only on the new 12.10 qq i386 and amd64 iso installs.
I also made a powerpc install with the 20120601 iso and the volume slider worked just fine on my old G4 PowerBook. All my 12.04 pp isos installs are working too.
