It's up to each individual to decide if they want to trust an off-shoot like LXLE, I personally prefer not to. Even Linux Mint bothers me in the way they handle kernel updates and other security updates. That said, if you installed Ubuntu 12.04 and then installed "lubuntu-core" how would that effect security, it only installs these packages; elementary-icon-theme galculator giblib1 gnome-icon-theme-full libfm-data libfm-gtk-data libfm-gtk1 libfm1 libid3tag0 libimlib2 libmenu-cache1 libobrender27 libobt0 lightdm-gtk-greeter lubuntu-artwork lubuntu-artwork-12-04 lubuntu-core lubuntu-default-settings lubuntu-icon-theme lxmenu-data lxpanel lxsession lxshortcut obconf openbox openbox-themes pcmanfm plymouth-theme-lubuntu-logo plymouth-theme-lubuntu-text scrot Of course installing 'lubuntu-desktop' installs much more, but what would the security implications be of installing only those minimal packages? I can't answer that question.
