Just an addition to what I reported earlier: from the terminal window in Ubuntu Server, I tried installing lubuntu-desktop.
When I rebooted, I had the same hang at the flashing dots that normally happens. I ctrl-alt-f1'd to get to a screen, I could login. Since lubuntu-desktop was installed, I tried "startx" I got a blank black screen. I ctrl-alt-f1'd and saw a list of initializations (including MIT-SHM, DAMAGE, DR12, and SECURITY among others), along with an Internal error: "Could not resolve keysym XF86AudioMicMute", and a message that "errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server." I don't know if this helps. Ubuntu Server gets me to a login screen and I was able to go through the process of installing "lubuntu-desktop" from the console prompt but it failed there upon reboot.
