zRAM does not start for me in Lubuntu Saucy desktop alpha 2 32-bit, neither in vbox nor in a real computer. Turn off the boot options quiet splash, and you should be able to see that it fails. It used to work. Can you figure out what is wrong now? And/or which package to blame for it?
