So I actually need to log in twice, in two different ways, to get back
to the original session. I would expect that the login screen should
get me fully back to my original desktop without needing to enter the
password a second time at the Xscreensaver.

This happens even if I am only out of the original user's desktop for a
few seconds.

I have experienced this same behavior, but from a different set of actions to trigger it.

On my machine, I have 5 partitions, which I boot at different times.

One of them is my primary system, which Lubuntu, which I am using to send this e-mail. This (Lubuntu) partition uses XScreensaver.

Whenever I boot any of the other partitions, the next time I log-in on the Lubuntu system, just after logging-in, XScreensaver immediately starts running, and I have to re-enter my password on it, before I can do anything on my system.
