Anybody looking for a solution to the portable idea, a
friend-of-a-friend offered me his solution. Which is to use combined
thumb drive and SD card reader. He uses a couple of these with the OS /
on the flash part and /home on an SD card which is inserted into the
appropriate thumb drive. This allows him to boot most of the computers
he comes into contact with and always have up to date data with out
having to sync between different thumb drives.
