I'm glad that you have had fuller contact with his thinking and can confidently assert that he doesn't think that average desktop users need to install resident AV protection -- at least for the time being. We're safe enough for now.

But it still leaves us with the future prospect of whether the Hand of Thief Trojan creator can make good on his plan to develop it into an effective tool for drive-by attacks.

Yes and no. I have watched other vids that he has made in the past addressing security concerns over Linux and exchanged correspondence with him. I think his overall evaluation is that while Linux is not bulletproof( what is?) it is certainly the best in the field. I think I could safely summarize his view as this: the normal, daily desktop user of Linux does not need to run anti virus protection. Perhaps if you run a server of do other things then you need anti virus. But then again that is his( and my opinion) and each user should do what he/she thinks is best.

Actually, though his conclusion is that the Hand of Thief Trojan
threat is blown way out of proportion, he speaks as if Linux is
already subject to many threats that are much more serious than
    the Hand of Thief.

In other words, he seems to contradict the comforting analysis
    given here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Linuxvirus (on
account of which I, and probably many other 'buntu users, are not
    running resident anti-virus protection).

If he's right, we should not be reassured but alarmed (though not
by the Hand of Thief at the moment).

You may want to check out this youtube video about the "Hand of

    wrapped around it pretty good.

I understand that with a standard Ubuntu/Lubuntu installation

That may still be true today, but perhaps it won't be for too
much longer. See the last 3 paragraphs of this article:
