Hi Lars, according to the wiki entry [1] *Evince* is a document viewer<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Document_viewer> for PDF <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format>, PostScript<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript> , DjVu <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DjVu>, TIFF<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagged_Image_File_Format> , XPS <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_XML_Paper_Specification> and DVI<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_independent_file_format>
GpicView is the default image viewer in lubuntu and it opens .png's quite happily.
