I stored locally my mails for more than five years, and I'm a designer, I exchange tones of large images and files. Half a hard drive only for the mail :)

I have no idea. Ideally it would have been written not to have a
limit. I guess you could contact the developers directly, and ask them,
they would probably be the people to ask about this.

used Evolution for years, with POP3 behaviour, so imagine in a few
years how many files you can download, or how many messages you can
store. No, I don't think so it's limited at all.
