As I recall (it's been a long time), my KeyMusician Keyboard (Java
application) also had similar problems on just that machine.
It might be an artifact of the way Java does graphics, since I think
LibreOffice (or at least common portions of it) use Java.
Those problems do not occur on 12.04 - only on more recent system levels
(with that old graphics card).
