In installing 14.10, I notice (in the task manager processes) commands like "cc" (C-compile), "cc1", and "as". Clearly, something is being built.

In installing UbuntuStudio on my 1.7 Ghz machine, it was building a NVIDIA handler, and other modules. I saw post-install stuff happening (dkms).

Perhaps it is something to think about if you click the "Install Updates While Installing" option. For things used during the install, it appears to immediately install the updates. Other updates are downloaded, but not acted upon.

It is very likely safer (even if there are few updates) to install the updates later.
