abiword click on file open and choose the document to open.

I am having difficulty opening Word documents which have been
downloaded as Gmail attachments. Using Firefox browser I choose "save"
to downloads, and when I go to "downloads" in Lubuntu I can't open the
doc. If I right-click it will say "open with Firefox" and a web window
opens with an unreadable (encoded) document tree.
Can someone please show me a simple way to open such docs in Abiword,
for example?
