But collateral damage included a broken plymouth splash screen. It is now a white screen with full-height thin vertical black bars and some occasionally recognizable pieces (the progress dots).
John:

I have a machine with an Intel 815 (82815 chipset) video card.

As far back as I can remember using Linux on that machine, the display you describe has appeared during booting.

The change that caused it to boot to a blank screen, also made the screen displayed during boot (the 4 flashing dots) finally become readable (at least, it was readable during shut-down after booting to a blank screen).

My system can (for the time being) continue using 14.04 by having locked the level of the xserver-xorg-video-intel package, as you apparently did.

That will keep the machine alive until 14.04 is no longer supported, since 14.10 also boots to a blank screen on that machine.

Hi, Aere.

I noted that you were the bug reporter for the i815 bug.

And I see that you're right. I just put a fresh 14.04.1 install on another hard drive in that machine, and sure enough, white screen with black bars during boot and shutdown.

I must have ignored and then forgotten about the smaller problem while I was dealing with the bigger problem, resulting in a classic case of "barking up the wrong tree" (a technical phrase).
