And I can tell it which .tar.gz files to create. My hard disc is big enough for me to keep spare copies of the .tar.gz files and I regularly backup the .tar.gz files to USB flash drives and occasionally DVD-R discs. It's not the simplest of bash scripts to read so I'd recommend reading up about the tar command.
