Have you tried also to change monitor resolution settings by Preferences - Monitor Settings - then save?

Someone might have more experience here to answer, but I had this problem once. I guess you need to create or tweek the xorg.conf file with the correct specification for your video card and monitor also...

It has been a long time since I fixed a computer like this, so please try to google how to create this configuration file when using the nvidia driver tool...

I carry out the following SYSTEMS - NVIDIA XSERVER SETTINGS
-CHANGE RESOLUTION TO 1280x1024- Manually- Enter APPLY - QUIT Then
quit again when asked. The resolution changes to 1280 x 1024 FINE..but next time i reboot/close down and restart the Resolution
goes back to what appears to be the DEFAULT?
