I just tried with Numix, and the bug is there. Could this be an issue in Abiword? I do not notice a cursor flicker in other GTK programs.

A quick look at their bugzilla page shows similar issues going back a number of years. So this might be a relic of a bug, that doesn't show up in certain themes.

Hi Rafael, Simon and Julien,

What about switching the default theme for Lubuntu in 16.04.1 LTS so
that it will come with a working Abiword? In other words to do the
work-around instead of leaving it to the end user?

Or will that break some other functionality?

Best regards

Don't worry. As soon as Light Themes (Ubuntu) drops some engine controls
and starts using native ones (like Adwaita does) this bug (and others)
will disappear. As we use Ubuntu core theme, it's not on us to fix it,
but it will be eventually.

Hi Nio, Thank you for taking the time to find out a workaround for
this. Your work is greatly appreciated. :) As for the bug(

carbon-copied Rafael Laguna to bring this to his attention. Have a
nice day!

Hi Nio,

I just saw your post in the mailing list: Abiword in Lubuntu 16.04 LTS - how to get rid of flickering and the responses.

A way to do what you want for just Abiword without switching Lubuntu's default theme, would be to edit its

Exec= line in /usr/share/applications/abiword.desktop

from Code:

Exec=abiword %U

to Code:

Exec=bash -c 'GTK_THEME=Adwaita abiword %U'
