Thank you Barry. The article says that the vulnerability can only be
exploited if the person logging in as guest has physical access to the
computer. I am the only one who uses this laptop so that is not a concern.

As instructed in the article, I added the lines:

[Seat:*]
allow-guest=true

to:

/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

This got the the Guest Session login working.

There was a minor annoyance of  "Error. No session PID " message box
popping upon logging in. I used a simple workaround found here:

Guest session works well now, no problems.
