Given the [highest supported version][1] is 5.3.0 and 5.4.0 is in development, this is outside of the scope of normal support, ultimately. I suspect, too, that given the reference to 5.4.0, you're probably on the development release (20.04), which is also outside of the scope of normal support. Anything in development should be considered likely to break and not suitable for production. If you want to discuss issues related to *Lubuntu* development, you should try [email protected]. However, your issue is not specific to Lubuntu. > dpkg either calls for a > number of dependencies which are not available, That sounds like the kind of thing we see in development versions. > The canonical-kernel-team PPA which I've relied on for > kernel updates That seems like a bad idea, in general, especially given the description given at the [PPA page][2]: "This ppa is used for building pre-release and test kernels. It IS NOT RECOMMENDED that you subscribe to this PPA." A [question at AskUbuntu][3] points out this PPA is primarily for internal use within Canonical. > but I like to have the newest kernel. Then you should likely consult with the [Kernel Team][4] as far as what they would recommend as the safest solution. I do know they offer [mainline builds][5] but you can see they have similar warnings: "These kernels are not supported and are not appropriate for production use." Similarly, when [discussing these builds at AskUbuntu][6] there are a plethora of warnings about breakage. Needless to say, the cutting edge is sharp.
