Hits.length() returns to large value

Sorry but 
for(int i=0; i<5; ++i) { any to do with i }
executes the same loop as 
for(int i=0; i<5; i++) { any to do with i }
so this can't be the problem.

the exception is thrown by the line int x = hits.id(i); and this i
runs from 0 to hits.length()-1 -- independet from using ++i or i++,
