Yes, these two issues seem similar.  However, I went ahead and submitted it as a
separate issue because:

 - it occurs using Sun's JDK, 1.4.1_01 (I will verify if it occurs under 1.4.2)

 - it occurs during search - the index is being read.  the previous issue
   seems to have occurred when the index was being written to and had to 
   do with writeByte()

It would be great if others could verify if they get the same exception or not -
the test case to reproduce it is very easy to run.
