:: MARITIME NEWS ::

1.	Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (China) contracted a SuezMax FPSO with China National Offshore Oil Corp.
2.	Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Japan) contracted a 50,000dwt dry cargo ship.
3.	Bouygues Offshore with Italy's Saipem has won a contract for an oilfield development project in Algeria at worth US$ 128.5 mill.
4.	Volvo Penta has been chosen as the complete engine supplier for a new series of tugs in the Ukraine. In all, this will involve deliveries of 15 diesel engines for three sister vessels which will be built in 2002.
5.	Lockheed Martin will provide the Arab Republic of Egypt with a fully integrated maritime search and rescue (SAR) system for the Gulf of Suez (GOS) under a $50 million contract signed.
6.	Wartsila acquires John Crane-Lips John Crane-Lips, a supplier of marine propulsion systems, will become part of Wartsila following the signing of a EUR 350 million sale and purchase agreement between Wartsila and John Crane-Lips' UK-based parent Smiths Group.
7.	The post of Director of Science and Technology On the 1st of February, Prof. Dr. Huib de Vriend Bsc. was appointed to the post of Director of Science and Technology at WL Delft Hydraulics. He succeeds. Dr. G. S. Rodenhuis Bsc. who has decided to take advantage of an early retirement opportunity. Alongside this directorial function, Prof. Dr. Huib de Vriend will continue to dedicate 30% of his time to his position as professor of river morphology and hydraulic engineering at TU Delft.
8.	New AGO Marine Fire Dampners Actionair's new AGO Marine Fire Dampners are tested and approved for Class A60 divisions (bulkheads and decks). Models are available for use with both rectangular and circular ductwork, and come complete with Lloyd's Register of Shipping Approval to IMO Fire Test Procedures Code (ANEX 1 Part 3).
9.	CSIC aims for 1.4m dwt haul in 2002 China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC), one of two shipbuilding groups within in Mainland China, has forecast that its group yards will bring in 1.4m dwt of newbuilding orders in 2002. CSIC, which largely controls yards in the north of the country, also plans to boost revenue this year to CYN 16.1bn ($1.09bn), a 12.6% increase on the corresponding period in 2001.
10.	Kvaerner and Aker Join Forces in Shipbuilding Norwegian groups Aker RGI and Kvaerner ASA on Monday announced plans to merge their shipyard activities, creating Europe's largest shipbuilder. The two concerns own 12 shipyards in Europe, plus one in the United States and one in Brazil, with 13,500 employees and total annual revenues of 20 billion kroner ($2.2 billion). The shipyards owned by Kvaerner and Aker RGI as of Feb. 15 will be managed by a joint company, to be called Aker Kvaerner Yards AS.
11.	Shipbuilding Industry in Shanghai Reports Growth The shipbuilding industry of Shanghai, where China's shipbuilding industry originated, reported rapid development last year with a record high shipbuilding tonnage of 1.81 million tons. A large shipbuilding base, with a total investment of 3.24 billion yuan (about 390 million US dollars), went into construction in November last year in Shanghai and upon completionis expected to provide a working platform for China to catch up with the Republic of Korea and Japan in shipbuilding. Several outstanding shipbuilding plants also emerged in the city last year, of which the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Company was the result of a merger between two large ship manufacturers. The company, with an expected shipbuilding tonnage of one million tons, or more than one fourth of the country's total, in year 2002, is likely to rank among the world's top ten shipbuilding giants.
