After posting the original email, I started wondering if that's the
issue, the fact that we store timestamp up to the millisecond rather
than a more reasonable granularity. Dates are too high a granularity for
us, but minutes, and possibly hours should work.
A partial compromise is if you need to keep the millisecond granularity, but that is not used for range searching to that degree is keep two separate fields... one to contain the precise one, and one that is less precise but accommodates searching more reasonably. Just a thought.
