It's funny, I had the same problems building the demo code with ant that Alex Murzaku did at about the same time. I didn't see the thread here as I wasn't subscribed at the time, but I posted a fix to lucene-dev. It's archived at http://www.geocrawler.com/lists/3/SourceForge/2626/0/6041462/ After building I put the lucene jar and the build area demo directory in my classpath, then ran the demos.
