By removing the choice, the cost of the operating system is effectively hidden in the
overall cost of the componentry. That cost, industry sources tell me, is typically
$US140 — 160, or around $NZ300 per machine.

In a filing with the US Security and Exchange Commission in December last year,
Microsoft revealed that it really has only two profit-making units, Windows and
Office, but that the operating profits from those were an astronomical 85% and 79%
respectively. That puts the real cost of your $300 OS at around $45.

IDC reckon PC sellers shifted 363,250 new machines in New Zealand last
year. If only 95% of them shipped with Windows, that makes for an
operating systems bill of more than $100 million, or around $85 million
in gross profit.
