May 27, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to data released this week by research firm Gartner (gartner.com), worldwide server sales were up 27.1 percent in the first quarter of 2004, reaching 1.57 million units.
Gartner said that within this growth, there was a noticeable increase in uptake of the Linux operating system. According to Gartner, revenue of Linux-based server hardware rose 57.3 percent over the first quarter, while commercial Unix server revenue fell 2.3 percent.
Gartner said the first quarter numbers also showed that there was a clear move towards low-end servers. Among the top vendors, IBM continued to hold the lead in server hardware revenue, occupying a 30.7 percent share of the market. However, in unit shipments, HP finished ahead of IBM with a 28.5 percent share of the market, with Dell coming in third. ...............
