......... It has been said time and again that access to information and communication technology will determine who will thrive in the future, where information will be key to power. In Africa, unfortunately, the cost of proprietary software is exorbitant to say the least. In Kenya for instance, studies by Rishab Ghosh have indicated that the cost of a proprietary software license is equivalent to 3 years wages.
No Kenyan, will starve for three years to have a licensed computer software. This calls for alternative sources of software that will ensure the Kenya is not left behind in the information age. Civil Society Watch Dogs are left to ponder for alternative solutions that will help enrich the disadvantaged and at the same time help catalyse the creation of an information technology industry that will thrive on local talent. Then comes the suitor from the heavens who seems to fulfill all these requirements – FOSS.
The FOSS movement is characterised by a sense of purpose, is geographically diverse, thrives on innovation, is focused on results and is multicultural. FOSS seeks to liberate the masses that civil society organisations seek to empower...........
