Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) Status Report - 13th June 2003
Dear all, 1. FOSSFA in conjunction with APC (Association for Progressive Communications) today completed the proposed Action Plan and a brief state of OSS in Africa which is attached herewith in rtf format. The Action Plan will now form a basis of our activities and it has finally received input from the Francophone community. I have been invited to present the same to the high level conference of UNCTAD Africa Trade and Industry Ministers in Tunis next week and thereafter immediately embark on fundraising for its implementation. Its is therefore important that the Team Leaders of the committees give me financial estimates of their proposed activities by close of business next week. The draft has been circulated to some donors such as IDRC, DFID, IISD and UNDP who have indicated willingness to sponsor some specific components. I really look forward to your cooperation on the same and hope you will take time to read the same one more time.. The only event to report for the fortnight was a highly successful event organised by 4 FOSSFA members (Circuits and Packets Communications, DireqLearn, AITEC and Computer Aid International) in Nairobi, Kenya where we demonstrated thin client linux technology to schools in the environs of Nairobi. There was great enthusiasm with the epitome being a meeting with the Minister of Education in Kenya who invited FOSSFA and its partners to be more engaged in developing and deploying solutions for educational purposes in the continent. Some photos are attached herewith for your info and the event showed how FOSSFA can be bring together different actors to promote Open Source in Education.
