A closer look at the article shows that it was the software that achieved the speeds and they used gigabit ethernet cards (which are not that expensive), and ofcourse Linux as the OS.

In tests using off-the-shelf hardware, the CalTech scientists achieved a speed of more than 8 Gbps

I would be interested in knowing what hardware this was.Sekidde, do you have more info?
