Advantage for the manufacturer. All smartphones today are pretty much full PCs. And then you have the choice of M$ PocketPC, Linux or Symbian as operating system. Now PocketPC is really Windows, with all its issues. Symbian is a good design but it is potentially as insecure as Windows and, crucially has bad development tools (development is largely C++-based, using gcc2 from 1998! Ok this is hidden behind M$ Visual Studio, but still...). Linux has obviously proved itself elsewhere.

So the issue is not "linux", it is: What is the best platform for me to build on so that I can easily deliver the right user experience, consistently over time.

It will run linux and so? Unless you are in the business of manufacturing phones, I don't see any benefit to the end user.

Motorola is planning to release a skype ready phone.

That is what I call adding zing to a phone!

As much as I had great hopes for the SymbianOS, noises I am hearing seem to be pointing to a future with either M$ or Linux-based cellphones. Symbian is great but the development tools are simply awful. And you need to have the developers on your side...
