I have to agree with Paul. It's basically Java done right. The only
downside is that there are not as many libraries available as there are
for Java, not as many implementations etc. But it's definitely better
technology. Anything that can make applications portable between
platforms is a good thing ...

Having since taken a closer look, one can safely say that with a lot
of .NET, Microsoft got things very right indeed. C# is really quite
well-designed as a language, and .NET is also well designed, not as
over-engineered as Java, so it is pleasant to work with. And C# and
the .NET 'common language runtime' are ECMA standards, so they are (a
bit) safer from meddling by the creator.
Naturally therefore, Mono is good for Linux.
It is not surprising that C# and .NET are so well designed. Sometime
around '96, Microsoft Research started stealing programming language
specialists. Old hands. I know one chap who left a tenured university
position to go to Microsoft (which seemed totally odd at the time).
Many years later we can see it has paid off.
So if you are into this sort of thing, it will be worth your while to
give C#/Mono/.NET a test drive...

It's perhaps the most controversial project in the open source world,
but this mostly stems from misunderstanding: Mono, the open source
development platform based upon Microsoft's .NET framework. Immediate
reactions from many dubious Linux developers have ranged from
confusion over its connection with .NET to wondering what the
benefits of developing under it are.
"Throughout the course of Mono's four years of intense development,
sponsored by Novell, founder Miguel de Icaza has had to frequently
clarify the .NET issue and sell the community on it...........
