Uganda will legalize its VoIP services after July this year following
Tanzania where they have been been legal since February 2005, writes Esther
Nakkazi.

In February, the Tanzanian Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) issued
a roadmap for the implementation of the new converged licensing to guide the
future of ICT sector development.

Dr. Raynold Mfungahema from TRCA said VoIPs have been legalized in Tanzania
since February 23rd and they have already received very many applications.
But he emphasized that since their policy allows neutrality in technology
used, they do not mind what type of technology the service providers are
using but the quality.

Uganda Communications Commission's (UCC) Executive Director, Patrick
Masambu, meanwhile said UCC expects a flood of VoIP service provider
applications after they have been legalized in July this year. Up until now
the only authorised service providers were the two national operators-MTN
and UTL whose licenses approved their use.
