No matter how much R&D you do, the basic SMTP and ESMTP protocols remain the same. SO it is not about whether Yahoo and Gmail spend a lot on research. Probably the research helps them build bigger and more efficient large scale systems but the protocols remain the same. However to get back to the core issue in this discussion, if a mail server can send to the rest of the world fine except to a particular network, then it is most likely that the problem is with that particular network. I too have had mail delivery problems to the utl mail servers. I have just tried a connection to their port 25 on mail1.utlonline.co.ugand it took a cool 3 minutes before I got the 220 msg telling me things are ok I may proceed. The very very scary part is that I get this when I connect to the alternate: 220 mail2.utlonline.co.ug ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.10/8.12.10; Fri, 22 Apr 2005 Who still runs sendmail in this day and age? With software like exim and postfix available?
