ah ok. it can be a good practice for East African Center for Open Source Software to redistribute the less commercial distros like FC3, Gentoo, FreeBSD, Slackware, etc.., rather than SuSE. I feel that although Novell allows free redistribution without "consideration", these guys need bucks for the work they inject into SuSE to make it more refined than many other distros.

(what do u think Kiggs, SuSE distributor for UG? EACOSS is taking you out of business!)

The OpenSource model is a difficult one to control. EACOSS and KYM-NET have different goals. Before EACOSS, we were all doing a part of its work and we have all been very delighted that EACOSS has come along and taken up the flag and successfully ran with it. EACOSS is doing exactly what it should.

SuSE became the dominant Linux distro in Uganda specifically because we handed out copies of it to those who could not afford to buy it and encouraged those people who got copies to copy and pass it on. We were doing then what EACOSS is doing now. Back in 1999 when KYM-NET became a SuSE reseller, there were few people who understood Linux and FOSS.

KYM-NET does loose money as some people will take advantage of the free offer and not purchase a box. But there will still be those to whom the accountant or auditor will ask to see the box of software they acquired and is supposedly a critical part of their business. Taking out a burnt DVD with your own scrawly handwriting and saying "the entire office was installed using this CD ..." will mark you for top priority to Butabika in the eyes of the head of Finance.

To those we shall sell a box or two and life will go on. Part of the blame is my SA supplier who, if he had been faster and had supplied the week before last like I had first asked .... we would not even be having this discussion.

Right now Uganda is still at the stage where most Linux money is being made from selling boxes (the M$ model). We are slowly beginning to move from that model to where we make money from services and software associated with a large installed base of Linux boxes. EACOSS and KYM-NET would love to see the time when this next level is reached.

So there are a number of levels that we can look at it from. We partner on some levels and compete on others (which is healthy).

This round will go to EACOSS :-) :-)
But like the Gubener of Califo-neee-a said in one of his movies. We Will Be Back!!! :-) :-)
