Subject: [Wireless-training] RF connectors, pigtails & antennas / alternative sources

dear all,

i mentioned on several occasions
how basic materials for
do-it-yourself antenna building and connections
could maybe be purchased from asian sources
at much lower prices than from US/european sources.

here is an update:

i have made some test orders from taiwan companies,
and recently, while staying at ICTP italy,
have had a chance to test the materials.

the quality of the materials is absolutely ok -

therefore,
i would encourage everybody to consider these sources,
whereever connectors, pigtails, antennas are needed.

to give you a few examples:

N connectors, e.g. for cantenna building,
        typically are
        USD 4-5 from US/europe sources,
down to USD 1-2 from direct sources.

pigtails, e.g. from Linksys boxes to N connector antennas,
        typically are
USD 20 (circa) from US/europe sources,
down to USD 3-5 from direct sources.

all it takes is your initiative,
and the organization of enough partners with an interest.

if we can order in larger quantities,
the prices really make a difference.

i d be happy to act as a collector and distributor,
but i am equally happy to share my contacts.
it is not my plan to become a distributor myself!!!!

especially for east african projects,
it might make sense to re-establish some of the
traditional trade routes towards the east.
dhow culture!

and it might make sense for european community networkers too.

pls forward/disseminate this as you find it appropriate.

all the best,

sebastian
