Actually, things have changed a bit. Far as I remember from the days I used to be subscribed to lkml, Andrew Morton maintains the stable kernel and someone else (Tossati??) maintains the 2.4 kernel.
Also, there are several kernel forks, Alan Cox's, Ingo Molnar, etc, etc. that all solve different things.
You can check out the latest happenings at http://kerneltrap.org.
There's even a link somewhere on that page that shows all the kernel forks and what they achieve.
