But for a network backup, I don't you think rsync would do the job

PS:
This is not in the documentation but you need to have gawk
installed as a
prerequisite - usually it should come with your UNIX installation
so you
might not need to do anything but you may need to download and
install it.
Secondly, with FreeBSD, you may need to change the first line to read
#! /usr/local/bin/gawk -f
Instead of the default which is
#! /usr/bin/awk -f
