Call for Applications CWRC Technical Officer
A Community Wireless Resource Centre (CWRC) is
being established under the Department of
Electrical Engineering with the general objective
to provide or enhance sustainable Internet
connectivity infrastructure, particularly in
rural or underserved areas in Uganda, by means of wireless technology.
As its flagship project, a total of six community
wireless networks, consisting of approximately 30
operational radio links, will be designed and
implemented in three regions of Uganda. The
concept of community wireless networks is based
on the possibility for groups or communities to
build self-owned and operated communications
networks. The project will use equipment based on
the IEEE 802.11 protocol for wireless networks,
and operating in unlicensed frequency bands.
The CWRC seeks to recruit a technical officer who
will be responsible for all technical aspects of the project on a daily basis.
I. Term of Office
One year contract (renewable). Duty station is
Kampala, with frequent travel locally.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Design, implement and maintain six community
wireless networks to be established in the first year of the project
- Participate in the development and delivery of
seminars and training workshops to support
capacity development in the design, installation
and maintenance of community wireless networks
- Conduct research on the technical feasibility
and economic viability of community wireless networks
- Study and learn from existing sustainable
business models and adapt them to the local conditions of the telecentres
- Monitor and evaluate the community wireless
networks, and document findings and lessons learned
- Facilitate the placement of industrial training
students at the telecentres during the period of
June August of each academic year
- Contribute content to the CWRC website and
other information dissemination fora established
- Make monthly reports on CWRC activities
- Assist in the preparation of proposals to
develop CWRC programs and activities
- Review material proposed for courses such as
Wireless Propagation and Introduction to
Information and Communication Technologies
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as
may be assigned to promote CWRC programs and activities.
Experience and qualifications for the job at hand include:
- Good understanding and hands-on experience in
the building of wireless networks.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines with minimum supervision.
- Possess at least a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Result oriented. Creative and able to take initiative.
- Good report writing skills, with special
attention to detail, timeliness, and quality of presentation.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- Self-motivation, flexibility, willingness to
work beyond regular working hours including
weekends, and ready to travel locally and abroad.
III. Job Status
This is a full-time position with the Community
Wireless Resource Centre (CWRC).
