It's not so much an "ability", as it is a requirement. In the 
UNIX/Linux world, the only way to avoid having to deal with 
painful dependencies is to have a binary package, and even 
then, there's still a good chance you'll have to deal with 
them anyway.

Wanting flexibility means that's what you get. If you want a 
single package that does it all, you may lose some of the 
flexibility. In the end, you can't have it both ways.
