I'm with Kiggs & Mark on this one. Apple's still the only manufacturer of the iPhone. Unlocking it means I can buy one[*], get it here and put my MTN/Celtel/Mango sim in it. Also it means that someone who wouldn't write software for the iPhone now may[+]. Making it even more popular. Leading to even more sales of the iPhone. Any way I look at it, it boils down to pr0f1t for Apple.

In the meantime, one would have to look up the UK option to get a (network wise) unlocked phone.

Also, if there's a root password on any device of *_MINE_*

1. I want to know it
2. I want to change it.

The whole idea of limiting my access to a device I've bought just "so it doesn't crash" is weird. It's like even after you buy the $500 phone, Apple still owns it. I mean you have a fully fledged OS X on there. Give me ssh already.

[*] well that'd be get an American pal to buy one and pay the cancellation of contract fee OR if they have a contract already somehow just ride on that...

[+] I for one would be interested in a SIP (or IAX2 if I could pull it off) client for the iPhone. Apple's agreement with ATT probably prohibits that, so you'd have to get a 3rd party hackintosh certified program (or write one yourself).
