I tend to agree. Google is not going to build a phone. I believe they
are being smarter than that. Other people will build the phone.
The plan (based purely on public information) would seem to be to an
attempt to repeat the Microsoft PC OS commoditisation story of the
early 80s. Once the PC OS was commoditised, the PC software industry
could flourish, innovators could really spread their wings. The guess
is that Google wants to catalyse that in the mobile handset arena.
Of course the bet on google's part is that they can out-innovate
everyone else in such commoditised space. Which seems a fair bet thus
far.
The one fly in the ointment so far: Java as the platform language!
