I wonder how much it costs for 1mbps of IP routes in the US for the service
providers perhaps $30 per 1mbps from global crossing or above net, I got a
quote from a service provider today and he is quoting $3100 for 1mbps on
SCPC/DVB not even a clean SCPC link and yet I am buying bulk.

Imagine when I add my ( Opex + Capex + ROI + Shareholder returns + Taxes +
License costs + Profit margin) think about how much the cost of the bandwidth
will be, the ripple effect kicks in towards the customer and you find that I
will

- Give you an expensive service for little dedicated capacity.

- Give you a bad contention ratio (crap service) at a fair price.

It depends on where you want to make the trade off, but then you need to
remember there is little penetration of infrastructure in Africa and also the
literacy levels (in terms of internet) are still growing so the market isn't
too large so there is only so much capacity you can buy.

Unfortunately the situation is only getting worse at the moment, sub marine
fiber is still a few years away from the east African cost, (we are now
looking at getting terrestrial link to the red sea thru Sudan not via Darfur
though J) the growth of DSTV and GTV are shrinking the satellite capacity
even further, the increased number of Telco's and ISP's in the region are
also increasing.

It's a tough business this side of the river

After taxes and all the fees that i pay for service. It comes out to $45 a
month for unlimited use of a cable connection with 8Mbits downloads and
1.5Mbits upload.

In uganda you I hear that they sell Mbits like airtime, something like 2Mbits
for $200 averaging at 100kbps down and up.

( Im guestimating the price since my friend told me what he was paying almost
a week ago.)

It would be great for either one of these projects to move ahead. That is the
main thing preventing me from returning back to Uganda. I will not settle for
anything less than 4MBits download. At a resonable cost that it.

Probably not, if ever, and it's largely irrelevant what the GoU does
in this regard, as the Eassy/NBIN cable project seems to be farther
behind than TEAMS/SEACOM/FLAG projects.

This article is incorrect when it says:

"However, out of the 23 countries that recently gathered in Rwanda to
sign up the project, only 12 including Uganda have since signed the
Kigali protocol with only six ratifying it."

as malawi was the 7th (they only need 7 to ratify it.

So GoU action/inaction aren't a showstopper on this.
